Cold Weather Slows the Bite, But Sheepshead Fishing Remains Strong
The recent cold weather in Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor has made the fish a bit sluggish, but with the right approach, there are still plenty of opportunities to reel in some great catches.
Sheepshead Action Continues:
The most consistent bite has been from sheepshead, which are actively feeding around docks, bridges, and the canals of Punta Gorda Isles (PGI). These areas have been the go-to spots for steady action and quality catches during the cold snap.
Snook Holding in Deep, Protected Areas:
Despite the chilly conditions, we’ve had success landing snook by targeting deep holes in wind-protected areas. Ladyfish chunks fished on the bottom have been particularly effective. With the right bait and location, you can still hook some impressive snook.
Best Bet: PGI Canals for Mixed Action:
The canals of PGI have been producing a variety of species, making them the best option during this cold spell. Anglers have been catching a mix of sheepshead, jacks, black drum, and some sea trout. For the best results, try fishing in warmer waters during the afternoon, focusing on sunny, wind-protected spots.
The colder weather has made fishing a bit more challenging, but with the right techniques, there’s still plenty of action to be had. Bundle up, head to the right spots, and make the most of the season!
